Imagine standing before a full-scale replica of a Parisian palace. This is the Legion of Honor. It is formally known as the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. The Legion of Honor is an art museum. It is located in San Francisco’s Lincoln Park. This museum is part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

The Legion of Honor has a fascinating story. Alma de Bretteville Spreckels and her husband Adolph B Spreckels gifted it to the city. Alma convinced Adolph to fund this project. She even acquired art and financial support from Europe. The French government and Queen Marie of Romania donated fine art. Marie even gave a replica of her Byzantine Golden Room.

The building mirrors the French Pavilion from the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. That pavilion was itself a smaller version of the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur in Paris. The French government allowed Spreckels to build a permanent replica. World War I delayed the start until 1921. The Legion of Honor opened on Armistice Day in 1924. It was a memorial to Californian soldiers killed in World War I.

The Legion of Honor sits on elevated ground in Lincoln Park. From here, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. Between 1992 and 1995, a major renovation took place. This included seismic upgrades and an underground expansion. The Court of Honor got a pyramidal skylight similar to the Louvre Pyramid.

The plaza has a marker for the Lincoln Highway’s western end. Look for Pax Jerusalemme a modern sculpture by Mark di Suvero. It caused quite a stir when it was installed.

Inside the Legion of Honor, discover 6,000 years of art. The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts holds a vast collection of works on paper. Ancient artifacts from Egypt, Greece, and Rome fill the Hall of Antiquities. See a 4,000-year-old wooden figure of Seneb.

The museum has European art with a strong French presence. Auguste Rodin’s sculptures are a highlight. You will find The Thinker in the Court of Honor. Works by El Greco, Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh are also featured. The European Decorative Arts include a Spanish ceiling from around 1500. There are also period rooms like the Salon Doré from Paris.

Don’t miss the Spreckels Organ in gallery 10. Its 4,500 pipes are hidden behind a trompe l’oeil ceiling. Attend a concert on Saturdays. The Gunn Theater hosts chamber music and lectures. Notice the ceiling mural called The Apotheosis of the California Soldier.

The Holocaust Memorial is located near the Legion of Honor. George Segal created this moving sculpture.

The Legion of Honor has appeared in films like Vertigo and Raising Cain. This iconic museum is more than just a building. It is a monument to art, history, and human connection. It is a place where the past and present meet. The Legion of Honor is a must-see destination in San Francisco.
