“Ever wondered why this street is so curvy?” Look around you. This is Lombard Street in San Francisco. Famous worldwide it’s known as the “most crooked street in the world”. Millions visit each year.
But this wasn’t always a tourist attraction. Originally its steep incline was a safety hazard. In the 1920s a clever resident Carl Henry suggested creating these hairpin turns. This innovative solution solved the problem. It also added a unique charm.
The eight sharp turns reduce the hill’s steep 27 percent grade. That’s much safer for vehicles. The red brick road is only one way downhill. A sign recommends a speed of just 5 mph. Even so it still gets crowded. Up to 17000 visitors a day come on busy summer weekends.
Did you know the name Lombard Street has no connection to San Francisco history? It’s named after a similar street in Philadelphia. The street also became a setting for many films. Good Neighbor Sam Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine What’s Up Doc and Ant-Man and the Wasp all used it as a location. Even the Pixar film Inside Out featured this famous street.
Today Lombard Street is more than just a road. It’s a symbol of San Francisco’s ingenuity and beauty. The stunning views from the top are breathtaking.
