Originally known as the Hall of Transportation, Building 2 stands before us. This building is a tangible link to San Francisco’s grand past. Let’s step back in time to the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. The exposition celebrated the completion of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. It aimed to uplift the United States from the Great Depression.

Building 2 is one of the last three intact structures from that exposition. Imagine this area bustling with excitement. The exposition showcased innovation, culture, and hope for the future. Building 2 played a central role as the Hall of Transportation. It displayed the latest advancements in travel and transport.

Architects William P. Day and George Kelham designed Building 2. Its architecture reflects the era’s optimism and grandeur. The building rises 20 meters high with two levels. Its design exemplifies the architectural style of the time.

San Francisco’s skyline saw its first skyscraper completed in 1890. It was the Chronicle Building. M. H. de Young commissioned it. He wanted to showcase the power of his newspaper. Industrialist Claus Spreckels responded. He purchased the San Francisco Call. Spreckels then commissioned his own tower. It would dwarf the Chronicle Building. The Call Building was completed in 1898. It remained the city’s tallest for nearly a quarter century.

The 1920s saw another skyscraper boom. Several Neo-Gothic and Art Deco high rises were constructed.

The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge presented many challenges. There were rapidly running tides. Frequent storms occurred. Fogs made construction difficult. A safety net saved 19 men from falling to their deaths. The bridge opened to traffic in 1937.

Building 2 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation recognizes its historical significance. Building 2 stands as a reminder of San Francisco’s resilience. It symbolizes the city’s ability to overcome challenges. It also embodies its spirit of innovation.

Today, Building 2 serves as a reminder of that era. The building links us to a time when San Francisco looked towards a brighter tomorrow. It is more than just a building. It represents hope. It embodies innovation and San Francisco’s enduring spirit. As we stand here, we honor the legacy of Building 2. We celebrate the visionaries who shaped San Francisco’s skyline.
