Ever notice the barking chorus and the blubbery bodies piled on the docks? These are the famous Pier 39 Sea Lions. Welcome to their bustling, noisy home right here in San Francisco.

Pier 39 is not just shops and restaurants. It is also a haven for these charismatic marine mammals. Their story here is quite remarkable. It began in September 1989. Sea lions started seeking refuge on these docks. Before this, they favored Seal Rock. But something drew them into the bay.

Some thought the Loma Prieta earthquake drove them here. But the sea lions arrived before the quake. Experts believe they simply feel safer within the bay’s embrace. In 1989, the docks were being refurbished. This meant all the boats had to leave. That opened up a lot of space. The sea lions quickly moved in.

At first, only a few dozen sea lions called Pier 39 home. By January 1990, their numbers exploded to 150. The boat owners were not thrilled. These animals can weigh up to half a ton. The noise and the smell became overwhelming.

But the sea lions were here to stay. The Marine Mammal Center advised leaving them alone. The tourists started flocking to see them. The Pier 39 Sea Lions became a major attraction.

The numbers of sea lions fluctuate. Sometimes there are only a few. Other times, the docks are packed. The record was set in 2009. Over 1,700 sea lions were lounging here. Researchers can even recognize individual animals. Some have even been unofficially named.

Staff and volunteers at the Marine Mammal Store monitor the sea lion population. They also educate visitors about these amazing creatures. Scientists study them to learn more about their health and behavior.

In winter, Pier 39 becomes a prime spot for sea lions. They come here to escape colder waters. In summer, many migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding. But a small group always remains at Pier 39.

Why do they choose Pier 39? It is a safe place to rest and haul out of the water. There is plenty of food. Herring is abundant in the bay. Plus, there are fewer predators here than in the open ocean.

Recently, there has been a surge in sea lion numbers. In May 2024, over 1,100 were counted. This is the highest number in 15 years. A massive school of anchovies is near the Farallon Islands. This makes Pier 39 a convenient “gas station” for migrating sea lions.

The Pier 39 Sea Lions are more than just a tourist attraction. They are sentinels of the sea. They provide clues about the ocean’s health. So enjoy the sights and sounds of these amazing animals. Remember to respect their space. Appreciate their role in the marine ecosystem. The Pier 39 Sea Lions continue to thrive here.
