Wow What a sight these Painted Ladies are. Aren’t they magnificent?

These iconic Victorian and Edwardian houses aren’t just pretty faces. They’re a living postcard of San Francisco’s history. Imagine the stories these walls could tell.

Built between 1892 and 1896 by developer Matthew Kavanaugh they survived the devastating 1906 earthquake. That’s impressive. They weren’t always this colorful though. Initially painted in muted earth tones they transformed in the 1960s. An artist named Butch Kardum spearheaded this colorful revival. He painted his own house in vibrant hues. His bold choices inspired neighbors to follow suit. Soon the whole street was a rainbow of colors.

The Painted Ladies’ architectural style is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian. Note the intricate woodwork the asymmetrical shapes. See those large bay windows? The expansive porches? These details are hallmarks of the era. The multi-colored paint schemes highlight every detail. They bring the craftsmanship of a bygone era to life.

The term “Painted Ladies” itself is relatively new. It only came into use in 1978 thanks to a book called Painted Ladies: San Francisco’s Resplendent Victorians. Before that these houses were just beautiful homes on a San Francisco street. They even appeared in the opening credits of the popular TV show Full House making them internationally famous.

These Painted Ladies are more than just houses. They’re symbols of San Francisco’s resilience its artistic spirit and its rich history. They represent the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. So take a moment appreciate these architectural gems. They’re truly a sight to behold. And remember the story of their transformation. From muted earth tones to vibrant masterpieces they stand as a testament to the enduring beauty of San Francisco.
