What secrets does the Unteres Warnowland hold? Before us lies a landscape sculpted by time and nature. The Unteres Warnowland is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It stretches over 1163 hectares, encompassing the lower course of the Warnow River. This area is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. The reserve was established on September 28th, 1990 and later expanded in 2001. The Unteres Warnowland is more than just a pretty sight. It provides valuable insights into the history of the region. Imagine, over 10,000 years ago, the last Ice Age was receding. A fissure in the glacial ice carved the path for the Warnow River, leaving behind a legacy of fertile land. As the ice melted, the river slowly deposited layers of sediment, up to 10 meters thick. This process, over millennia, created the perfect conditions for extensive bogs to develop. Some of these bogs, now part of the Unteres Warnowland, are up to 750 meters wide with peat layers reaching three meters deep. The Unteres Warnowland has witnessed the passage of time and civilizations. There is evidence of human settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. During the 12th century, Slavic communities thrived on the drier parts of the bogs. The edges of the Warnow Valley were used as grazing grounds. A testament to their presence is the Slavic fortress of Kessin. Throughout history, humans have tried to tame this wild landscape. In the 16th century, the first attempts were made to drain the land for agriculture and peat extraction. Now, the Unteres Warnowland stands as a testament to nature’s resilience. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human intervention and environmental preservation. Even the bustling city of Rostock, with all its modern needs, relies on the lower Warnow River for its drinking water. This underlines the crucial role this protected area plays in the region. The Unteres Warnowland beckons exploration, inviting us to uncover the stories whispered by the wind rustling through the reeds.
