Here at the Warnemünde passenger quay, we find ourselves face to face with a symbol of unity. This is Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture. These sculptures represent the five continents. They stand as a testament to Rostock’s international spirit.
The story of Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture began during the third Metal Sculptor Symposium in Schwerin in 1993 and 1994. Artists Klaus-J. Albert, Wolfgang Friedrich, and Wilfried Homuth created these colorful steel figures. Their work was supported by Neptunindustrie Rostock and KGW Schweriner Maschinenbau GmbH.
Originally, these sculptures were installed on the foundation piles of former rescue towers. They stood proudly on Warnemünde beach. For years, Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture served as beloved landmarks. They symbolized Rostock and Warnemünde’s openness to the world.
However, the harsh coastal climate took its toll. By 1998, the colors had faded and the bases were unstable. The sculptures had to be removed for restoration. They were carefully stored away.
But this wasn’t the end for Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, they were given a new lease on life. Companies like AIDA Cruises and Sartori & Berger GmbH & Co. contributed to their restoration. The sculptures were sandblasted and galvanized. The artists gave them a fresh coat of paint.
Now, Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture stands here. They have been reborn at the passenger quay. United on a single base, they greet visitors from around the globe. These sculptures serve as a striking artistic landmark. They enhance the entrance to the port. They stand near the cruise terminal.
Mayor Roland Methling highlighted the sculptures’ significance at the inauguration. He noted that this was the second time Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture had been unveiled to the public. After years in slumber, they have been freed from rust and repainted. They now stand united.
Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture is more than just art. It is a symbol of Rostock’s welcoming spirit. It is a reminder of our connection to the world. It is a testament to the power of collaboration. So as you gaze upon these vibrant figures, remember the story of their creation. Think about their journey. Consider the message they convey. Die fünf Kontinente Sculpture stands for unity. They stand for openness. They stand for the enduring spirit of Rostock.
