Why was the Angel with the Column Statue placed here on the Ponte Sant’Angelo? Look around. We are standing on the bridge leading to Castel Sant’Angelo, once the Mausoleum of Hadrian. This bridge, the Ponte Sant’Angelo, has a long and fascinating history. It has been a pilgrim route, an execution site, and now it’s a stunning showcase of Baroque art. Each angel statue you see here represents a moment from the Passion of Christ. This angel, the Angel with the Column, sculpted by Antonio Raggi, holds the column to which Jesus was bound during his scourging. Notice the inscription at the base of the statue: “Tronus meus in columna” – “My throne is in the column”. A powerful image, isn’t it? It reminds us of the suffering Jesus endured, even as he carried the weight of our sins.
