Ismael Silva was born Milton de Oliveira Ismael Silva. That was on September 14, 1905. He died on March 14, 1978. Ismael was 72 years old.
In 1925, Ismael Silva recorded his first samba. His compositions include “Me faz carinhos”. Others are “Se voc\u00ea jurar” and “Antonico”. Also popular were “Para me livrar do mal” and “Novo amor”. “Ao romper da aurora” and “Tristezas n\u00e3o pagam d\u00edvidas” were too. Not to forget, “Me diga o teu nome”.
Ismael Silva helped found the first samba school. It was called Deixa Falar. This school marked a turning point in samba history.
Facing financial struggles, Ismael moved with his mother. They left Jurujuba for Est\u00e1cio de S\u00e1. He was just three years old then.
At 15, Ismael composed “J\u00e1 desisti”. It is considered his first composition. “Me faz carinhos” brought him closer to Francisco Alves. Together with N\u00edlton Bastos, they formed the Bambas do Est\u00e1cio. This trio created “Se voc\u00ea jurar.” After Nilton’s death, Ismael collaborated with Noel Rosa. They created eighteen compositions together.
In 1928, Ismael Silva and other sambistas founded a bloco. This bloco became the samba school Deixa Falar. Deixa Falar paraded in 1929, 1930, and 1931. The school ended when Ismael moved.
Ismael Silva faced personal hardships. He was imprisoned for five years. He only served two due to good behavior. After his release, he became reclusive. He returned to the Carioca scene in the fifties. During this time, he struggled financially.
His samba “Antonico” became a hit. Journalist S\u00e9rgio Cabral and the Rio City Council recognized him. They gave him titles for his contributions to samba.
In 1973, Ricardo Cravo Albim produced one of his last concerts. It was titled “Se voc\u00ea jurar”. Ismael Silva died in 1978. He suffered a heart attack after surgery. The surgery was to treat a varicose ulcer on his leg.
Ismael Silva was known for his originality in the Carioca scene. Paulo Lins featured Ismael Silva in his novel “Desde que o Samba \u00e9 Samba”. The novel sparked controversy. It frankly discussed the artist’s homosexuality. The work recreates how he invented modern samba and the samba school.
