Mario Veiga de Almeida and his sister, Maria Anunciação de Almeida, recognized a need within their community. In 1937, the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus opened its doors. By the 1950s, the Colégio Veiga de Almeida flourished, boasting a student body of around 3,000. The dream of higher education became a reality in 1971 with the establishment of the Escola de Engenharia Veiga de Almeida. Initially offering Civil and Electrical Engineering, it laid the groundwork for UVA’s expansion into a full-fledged university. Official recognition from the Ministry of Education and Culture came in 1992. The Universidade Veiga de Almeida now encompasses a range of campuses across Rio de Janeiro. The Tijuca campus offers a wide array of programs, from Administration and Computer Science to Engineering and Healthcare. The Centro campus focuses on Business, International Relations, and Engineering. The Barra campuses, at Marapendi and Downtown, offer specialized programs in areas such as Psychology, Engineering, Design, and Business. UVA even extends its reach beyond Rio, with a campus in Cabo Frio offering programs in Business, Communication, Healthcare, and Education. Universidade Veiga de Almeida has a rich history of providing access to higher education. Its unique vestibular system, incorporating a traditional exam and an option for scheduled testing, caters to diverse student needs. It also recognizes the Enem exam for admission, further broadening access. UVA’s commitment to affordability is evident in its scholarship program for students from lower-income families.
