Conceived as a space where Rio de Janeiro finds and reinvents itself, the Museu de Arte do Rio stands before us. This is MAR. It is more than just a museum. It’s a journey into the heart and soul of this vibrant city.

The Museu de Arte do Rio opened its doors on March 1 2013. This date marked Rio’s 448th birthday. President Dilma Rousseff herself inaugurated it. MAR became a symbol of the revitalization of the port area. This was part of a grand project called Porto Maravilha.

Look around. Notice the two distinct buildings that make up MAR. To your left is the Dom João VI Palace. It is a listed building with an eclectic style. To your right stands a modern structure. It once served as a car park and bus terminal. A fifth-floor walkway connects these two different worlds.

Inside the Museu de Arte do Rio, eight exhibition halls await. They offer a multi-faceted view of Rio’s history. Explore its social fabric and symbolic life. Confront its conflicts and contradictions. Consider its challenges and expectations. MAR exhibitions bridge the historical and contemporary. They showcase national and international art. The museum is building its own collection. It acquires pieces and accepts donations. MAR also exhibits loaned works. These come from Brazil’s finest collections.

Don’t miss the Escola do Olhar. It is MAR’s own school of vision. This school integrates art into public education. It develops educational programs. These programs serve as a reference for actions in Brazil and beyond. Art and education come together here. This starts with the museum’s curatorial program.

Pause for a moment. Reflect on the significance of this place. The Museu de Arte do Rio is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living, breathing entity. It captures the essence of Rio de Janeiro. It invites us to explore. It challenges us to understand. It inspires us to see the city in new ways.

Before we move on, consider the Collection Storage Space. It opened in 2017. This space houses almost 8,000 museological items. It includes over 7,000 archival pieces. There are about 16,000 bibliographical works. This collection is the first conceived for the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The public can visit a special area. A glass cube allows visitors to see inside.

The Museu de Arte do Rio boasts an impressive collection. It features “Saint Joseph of Boots” by Aleijadinho. MAR is the only museum in Rio with a work by this artist. You’ll also find works by Tarsila do Amaral. Guignard and Pancetti are also exhibited. These are emblematic names from modern art.

As we leave the Museu de Arte do Rio, take a piece of it with you. Let the art spark new conversations. May it fuel a deeper appreciation for this magnificent city.
