Picture the grandeur of Fazenda São Bernardino. Imagine its neoclassical elegance. This wasn’t just any plantation. It was a symbol of wealth. A testament to the ambition of Bernardino José de Sousa e Melo.

Fazenda São Bernardino stands as a reminder of a bygone era. Built in the 19th century it flourished during the coffee boom. Its story is intertwined with the history of Nova Iguaçu. Its location near the Rio D’Ouro Railway boosted its success. The fazenda produced coffee sugar brandy and cassava flour. It even had its own railway stop. This shows how Fazenda São Bernardino wasn’t just a rural estate. It was a vital part of the regional economy.

The original main house was a masterpiece of architecture. Its creamy yellow walls contrasted sharply with dark green trim. The beautiful blue Portuguese tiles and copper-leafed railings were exquisite. The interior featured intricate stucco work and fine woodwork. Sadly a fire in 1983 destroyed much of the main building. The fire was believed to have been arson committed by city employees guarding the property.

In 1917 João Julião and Giacamo Gavazzi purchased Fazenda São Bernardino. They aimed to establish citrus farming. This required extensive deforestation. Sadly this altered the estate’s original character. It wasn’t just trees that were sacrificed. Gavazzi’s actions also led to the loss of much of its historical artifacts. He plundered and sold nearly everything. This made restoring the property even harder. Even worse a suspicious fire in the 1980s destroyed what little remained.

Fazenda São Bernardino’s history highlights the complexities of Brazilian history. It embodies the successes and failures of economic endeavors. Its story underscores the devastating impact of neglect and deliberate destruction. Despite the devastation its ruins still evoke the opulence of its past. The ongoing effort to revitalize the site shows that its legacy continues to resonate. Fazenda São Bernardino’s legacy persists. It is a constant reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage.
