Question: Ever stopped to consider what it means to commemorate a historical moment? The Descobrimento do Brasil Sculpture stands before us. It marks a pivotal point in Brazil’s history.

In 1900, Brazil celebrated 400 years since the Portuguese arrival. The idea arose to erect a grand monument. This would celebrate this historic achievement. Largo da Glória was chosen as the location.

Rodolfo Bernardelli designed the Descobrimento do Brasil Sculpture. He was a Mexican sculptor who immigrated to Brazil as a child. Bernardelli’s family had close ties to the Brazilian Imperial Court. His parents were tutors to Princesses Isabel and Leopoldina.

The monument features three bronze figures. They stand on a 10-meter-high hexagonal pedestal made of Brazilian granite. Pedro Álvares Cabral commands the fleet. Pero Vaz de Caminha is the fleet’s scribe. Frei Henrique de Coimbra is the chaplain who celebrated the first mass. Each figure can be viewed individually. This was important for the 400th-anniversary celebrations.

The Descobrimento do Brasil Sculpture allows each person to be observed. This highlights Pedro Álvares Cabral. Architect and researcher Camila Braga emphasized this.

The sculptural group was cast in bronze in Paris. The workshop Thiebaut oversaw it. Bernardelli directly supervised the work.

Sadly, the Descobrimento do Brasil Sculpture has faced challenges. It was vandalized in recent years. In one instance, the monument was set on fire. This act was attributed to movements against the demarcation of indigenous lands. The base of the sculpture was damaged. The Municipal Department of Conservation cleaned it. They assessed the fire damage.

The Descobrimento do Brasil Sculpture represents a complex history. It embodies discovery and cultural collision. It also reminds us of the importance of preserving memories. As we stand here, let’s reflect on the past. Let’s also consider the future. May we repair past errors. May we seek a future filled with even more important and better moments.
