A quiet reverence hangs in the air at Parque de Recuerdos. It’s more than just a cemetery. It’s a space where life and death intertwine, a reflection of Quito’s unique relationship with remembrance. Parque de Recuerdos challenges the traditional perception of cemeteries as places of sorrow and fear. It strives to be a place of peace and contemplation, a bridge between the living and the departed. A 2021 architectural and landscaping project aimed to revitalize Parque de Recuerdos. The goal was to create a space that integrated seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The designers envisioned a public space within the cemetery. It would offer a mix of uses and foster a sense of community. The project drew inspiration from the Karst landscape, known for its dramatic rock formations and caves. This design sought to break away from conventional cemetery layouts, offering a fresh perspective on how we interact with these spaces. The project also aimed to cultivate an ecumenical atmosphere, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds. Parque de Recuerdos invites us to embrace the cycle of life and death, not with fear, but with understanding and acceptance. It reminds us that even in loss, there is beauty, and that remembrance can be a source of comfort and connection.
