“Let me be quiet let me be healthy by ERRE” a poignant mural in Quito whispers stories of resilience. It depicts children their faces etched with a mix of hope and hardship. This isn’t just art. It’s a testament to Extreme Response’s work. ER a non-profit organization has been supporting Quito’s recycling community for over two decades. Imagine the challenges faced by families living and working amidst a landfill. In 2010 the Zambiza landfill was transformed into a transfer station. Families were displaced. Poverty persisted. ER stepped in. They began providing after-school programs. These programs offer homework help nutritious meals and educational workshops. More than 40 children benefit weekly. They are given a fighting chance. The mural’s vibrant colors tell a small part of their story. The children’s eyes though reflect a larger struggle a fight for education for a healthier future. In 2019 ER launched a women’s empowerment program. This program helps women develop small businesses. It teaches them new skills offering financial independence. They produce soap yogurt granola and even chocolate using recycled materials. The women’s newfound confidence is palpable. Their accomplishments a powerful counterpoint to the struggles depicted in the mural. “Let me be quiet let me be healthy by ERRE” isn’t just a plea. It’s a declaration.
