The soaring spires of Santa Teresita beckon. Feel the history breathe around you. This isn’t just a church it’s a testament to faith and community.

Iglesia Católica Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús stands proudly in Quito’s La Mariscal neighborhood. Its construction began in 1938 a project fueled by the donations of its future parishioners. Brother Mariano de San José Riocerezo masterminded its design. He drew inspiration from the majestic Gothic cathedrals of Europe. The resulting masterpiece is a striking example of Neo-Gothic architecture.

Imagine the fervent dedication of those early years. Wealthy families from Quito’s elite migrated to La Mariscal. They saw the need for a church. They opened their purses and their hearts. This wasn’t just about building stones and mortar. It was about creating a spiritual home.

The cornerstone was laid in 1938. The Carmelite Discalced order took on the responsibility of running the church. The building’s completion took almost two decades. It wasn’t solely funded by charitable contributions. The crypt opened in 1941. The sale of burial plots helped support the project. This crypt contains the remains of prominent figures including former President Sixto Durán Ballén.

Finally the church doors opened on March 19 1956. The interior is just as stunning as the exterior. Carmela Estévez de Carrillo’s vibrant artwork adorns the walls. Her symbolic paintings and sculptures illuminate the sanctuary. She worked under the pseudonym Intiyan Daughter of the Sun. Brother Riocerezo personally crafted the stained-glass windows in the dome. They are a breathtaking sight.

Iglesia Católica Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a living testament to the unwavering faith and collaborative spirit of a community. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Its beauty is a beacon of hope and devotion. It represents the enduring power of faith. It whispers stories of generations past.
