Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a place in Quito where education meets a miracle. That place is Colegio San Gabriel. It stands as a testament to history faith and academic excellence. Founded by the Jesuits in 1862 Colegio San Gabriel has a rich story. It began when President Gabriel García Moreno brought the Jesuits back to Ecuador. They were entrusted with a national college in Quito which they renamed Colegio San Gabriel.

Initially state-funded the school transitioned to private status in 1901. Then in 1958 Colegio San Gabriel moved to its current location on Avenida de América. This marked a new chapter for the institution. In 2011 the school expanded. It created a new educational unit for primary students of both genders.

But the story of Colegio San Gabriel isn’t just about education. It’s also about faith. The “Milagro de la Virgen del Colegio” or Miracle of the Virgin of the School is central to the school’s identity. On April 20 1906 a painting of the Dolorosa del Colegio is said to have opened and closed its eyes. This event occurred in front of boarding students.

The story says that the miracle lasted for about 15 minutes. It was a significant event. Pope Pío XII later authorized the canonical coronation of the Dolorosa del Colegio. And John Paul II declared her “Patroness of education for youth”. The chapel where the miracle occurred is an important part of the school. It used to be the school’s dining hall. It was part of the complex of the Convent of the Society of Jesus.

Colegio San Gabriel is more than just its history and miracles. Today it is part of several educational networks. These include the Latin American Federation of Jesuit Colleges. It also includes the Ecuadorian Confederation of Catholic Education Establishments. Finally it’s part of the Network of Ignatian Educational Units of Ecuador.

The school provides education from pre-kindergarten through high school. Its facilities include technology and science laboratories. There is also a library a gymnasium and sports facilities. These include a swimming pool soccer fields and an athletic track. Colegio San Gabriel also participates in sports tournaments with other Jesuit schools. These tournaments foster camaraderie and competition.

Colegio San Gabriel’s mission is to educate families. It aims to form Ignatian leaders who serve others. The school envisions itself as a community that prepares young people. It wants them to be intellectually competent. It wants them to be open to change. Also it wants them ready to face the challenges of the modern world. All this should happen in the spirit of service and solidarity. Colegio San Gabriel wants its students to build a more just and humane Ecuador.

So as you stand before Colegio San Gabriel consider its dual legacy. It is a place of academic pursuit and spiritual significance. It is an institution that has shaped generations of Ecuadorian leaders. Colegio San Gabriel continues to inspire hope. It encourages service and a commitment to building a better world.
