Emerging from the heart of Trujillo, Spain, Francisco de Orellana embarked on a journey that would forever etch his name into the annals of exploration. Here in Quito, his story intertwines with the very fabric of this city. Francisco de Orellana, a name synonymous with the discovery of the Amazon River, began his adventures in the New World alongside Francisco Pizarro, assisting in the conquest of the Inca Empire. His loyalty and bravery earned him lands in Ecuador, including the governorship of La Culata. It was in Guayaquil that de Orellana rebuilt and repopulated the city of Santiago de Guayaquil, a testament to his administrative abilities. The lure of the mythical El Dorado and the fabled Land of Cinnamon drew de Orellana to join Gonzalo Pizarro’s 1541 expedition departing from Quito. Little did he know, this expedition would lead him to a discovery far greater than gold. The expedition faced hardship after hardship, dwindling supplies and hostile terrain forcing Pizarro to send de Orellana ahead downriver in search of sustenance. Orellana departed with around fifty men, setting off on a journey from which there would be no return. The currents carried de Orellana and his men further and further downriver, making a return to Pizarro’s party impossible. The men, fearing the arduous journey back upstream, pressed on, their decision forever marking de Orellana as a “traitor” in Pizarro’s eyes. In February 1542, de Orellana and his men found themselves navigating the vast expanse of the Amazon River. They encountered indigenous tribes, some hostile, some helpful. It was during these encounters that the legend of the Amazons, fierce warrior women, became intertwined with de Orellana’s journey. This legend, whether rooted in truth or embellished accounts, would forever shape the name of the river he had discovered. After months of hardship and exploration, de Orellana finally reached the mouth of the Amazon, completing the first recorded navigation of the mighty river. Though accused of treason by Pizarro upon his return to Spain, de Orellana successfully defended himself, highlighting the insurmountable challenges his men faced in returning upstream. His journey, born from a quest for gold, transformed into a legacy of exploration, securing his place as one of history’s most daring explorers. Francisco de Orellana, a name whispered on the winds of the Amazon, forever connected to the heart of Quito, the starting point of his extraordinary voyage.
