Picture this You stand before the Iglesia de Santo Domingo in Quito. Its grandeur is breathtaking. This isn’t just any church. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site a testament to centuries of history and artistry.

Construction began in 1540. Dominican friars were assigned the land. They first built a small chapel. Then in 1581 architect Francisco Becerra designed the church we see today. After Becerra’s death Father Rodrigo Manrique de Lara took over. Fray Antonio Rodriguez oversaw the convent’s construction. Fray Juan Mantilla finished the church in 1688.

The 19th century brought changes. President Garcia Moreno brought Italian friars. They altered the church. The original main altarpiece and high choir were removed. Many Baroque elements vanished. A neo-Gothic altar and low choir replaced them. These are what we see today.

Step inside. The interior is stunning. Cedar wood carvings are covered in gold leaf. Paintings and carvings adorn every surface. Ten side chapels add to the magnificence. The most famous is the Capilla de la Virgen del Rosario. This chapel showcases the church’s cultural significance. It even has a mural of the Virgen de la Escalera by Father Pedro Bedon. This dates back to the early 17th century.

The church’s construction presented challenges. The uneven terrain led to ingenious solutions. The famous Arco de Santo Domingo was one such solution. This arch supports the Capilla de la Virgen del Rosario. It also allows Rocafuerte Street to flow uninterrupted below.

The Capilla de la Virgen del Rosario is a masterpiece. It has three levels. The lowest was for the common people. The second for priests and authorities. The top level was for the Virgin of the Rosary herself. Three brotherhoods used this chapel from 1650 onwards. Each group had its own space.

The altarpiece is exquisite. It’s entirely gilded with silver filigree. The Virgin of the Rosary is the centerpiece. This Spanish sculpture was a gift from a Spanish monarch in the 16th century. Relics of saints brought from Rome in Quito’s early days are kept in the side altars. They were used in the Rosary Brotherhood’s rituals and the Procession of Solitude.

The Santo Domingo complex includes a museum. It’s in the north cloister. The museum houses sculptures and paintings. These relate to the Dominicans’ history in the Americas. A large choral book by Father Pedro Bedon is here. So are two of his paintings and a portrait of him by Alonso del Castillo. The refectory is also remarkable. It has a 17th-century Mudejar coffered ceiling. It’s polychrome and gilded with paintings of Dominican martyrs. Carved and gilded statues of Dominican saints by Diego de Robles are displayed. These were once in the high choir.

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo is more than a church. It’s a treasure trove of art and history. It’s a living testament to Quito’s rich past. Take a moment to absorb its beauty. Let its history resonate within you. You’ve experienced a piece of Quito’s soul.
