The National Gallery in Prague Sternberg Palace is more than just a building. It’s a treasure chest brimming with European art a testament to centuries of creativity and artistry. This stunning Baroque palace stands proudly near Prague Castle. Its construction began around 1698 commissioned by Vaclav Vojtech Count of Sternberg. Although the architect remains uncertain it might be one of three prominent Baroque masters: K Dienzenhofer G B Alliprandi or D Martinelli.

Imagine the palace during its construction. Workers meticulously crafting the intricate stucco work adorning the interiors. They carefully placed the Roman emperor medallions and Hercules reliefs. The French roof a marvel of its time. All this speaks of incredible skill and vision.

The National Gallery in Prague Sternberg Palace wasn’t always an art gallery. It changed hands several times. In 1811 it became home to the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts’ picture gallery. Later it served as an asylum. Then it became a barracks during World War II. In 1945 it housed the Prague Castle Guard. It’s quite the journey isn’t it?

Now though the Sternberg Palace is an exhibition space displaying European art. From antiquity to the end of the Baroque period the collection is vast. On the ground floor you will find German and Austrian art from the 16th 17th and 18th centuries. The highlight is Albrecht Durer’s The Feast of the Rosary. The upper floors showcase Italian Spanish French and Dutch masterpieces. Names like Goya Rubens El Greco Tintoretto van Dyck and Rembrandt grace the walls. You’ll see works from the Este collection. You’ll even find a Chinese Hall decorated in the Chinese style. The palace even boasts halls with rounded mirrors reflecting paintings depicting tragic queens.
