Did you ever hear of a school that received a gift of K4000 worth of books? Bavaroko Primary School in Port Moresby did. In 2013, during National Book Week, the Australian High Commission made this generous donation. Bavaroko Primary School, located on Bava Street in Port Moresby, educates students from grades 3 through 8. The school, operated by the Department of Education, is a government school with a Christian affiliation. High Commissioner Deborah Stokes personally presented the books to Head Teacher Catherine Moresi. Ms. Stokes expressed her hope that this gift would significantly benefit the approximately 1500 students attending Bavaroko Primary School, both present and future. She emphasized the vital role of literacy in academic, professional, and social success. She also pointed out the joy and imaginative exploration that reading can unlock. Bavaroko Primary School, like many schools in Papua New Guinea, faces literacy challenges. Ms. Stokes acknowledged this, stressing the importance of access to books and reading resources. Stuart Schaefer, Head of Australian Aid in PNG, reiterated Australia’s commitment to supporting education in the country. He mentioned Australia’s initiative to provide up to four million free textbooks to schools by 2015-16. Australia further supports early childhood reading through funding for Buk Bilong Pikinini, a non-governmental organization establishing small libraries for children. They also provide support for teacher training institutions to enhance English language instruction. This comprehensive approach aims to equip PNG’s children with a strong foundation in literacy, opening doors to future opportunities. Bavaroko Primary School’s book donation serves as a reminder of the power of partnership and the importance of investing in education.
