Could this unassuming building really be a beacon of unity and peace? This is the National Bahai Centre in Port Louis. It stands as a testament to the growing presence of the Baha’i Faith in Mauritius. The Baha’i community, while a minority religion on the island, has blossomed since its arrival in 1953. The first Baha’i to step foot on Mauritian soil was Ottilie Rhein, a German-born woman who dedicated her life to spreading the teachings of Baha’u’llah. Imagine her joy when only three years later, over 100 people had embraced the faith in Mauritius. By 1956, three Local Spiritual Assemblies, the governing bodies of local Baha’i communities had been formed. The National Bahai Centre stands as a symbol of this remarkable growth. Today, the Baha’i community in Mauritius actively contributes to the social fabric of the nation, promoting interfaith dialogue, empowering youth, and contributing to the betterment of society. The National Bahai Centre, though modest in appearance, acts as a vibrant hub for these activities. It is a place where people from all walks of life come together to learn, pray, and work towards a common goal: a world united in peace and harmony.
