“Great Grand Uncle” whispers through the Penang breeze. This is how locals affectionately call Tua Pek Kong. Here, before the Tua Pek Kong Temple, we stand at a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. It is a place where the past intertwines with the present.

Tua Pek Kong isn’t just a deity. He embodies protection and prosperity for the Taoists of Penang. Temples dedicated to Tua Pek Kong are common here. They are second only to Dato Kong shrines in number. Think of Tua Pek Kong temples as parish churches. They are central to the Chinese communities.

The name Tua Pek Kong translates to Great Grand Uncle. He is believed to be an immortalized historical figure. This figure is Hock Teik. He lived during the Zhou Dynasty, over three thousand years ago. At 35, Hock Teik became a Mandarin. He was an official managing the Imperial Treasury. He often sought help from the emperor for his people during times of hardship.

Hock Teik passed away in 1236 BC. The Jade Emperor immortalized him as Thor Ti Kong. He was sent back to Earth to protect the people. This explains the proliferation of Tua Pek Kong temples.

Penang has its own local Tua Pek Kong. His name was Zhang Li. He was a Hakka man from the mid-18th century. Zhang Li was traveling to Sumatra. But his ship was blown off course to Penang. He settled within the existing Chinese community. After his death, he was deified as an honorary Tua Pek Kong. The Tanjong Tokong Tua Pek Kong Temple honors him.

The oldest Tua Pek Kong Temple in Malaysia sits right here in Tanjung Tokong. It was established no later than 1792. This temple became the origin for the worship of Tua Pek Kong. It spread throughout West Malaysia, Singapore, and parts of Indonesia.

One unique tradition linked to Tua Pek Kong is the flame watching ritual. It is called “Chneah Hoay”. It takes place on the 14th night of Chinese New Year. That night is also the eve of Tua Pek Kong’s birthday. The observation of the temple’s ceremonial urn flame predicts the economic health of the coming year.

The Tua Pek Kong Temple has seen changes over time. Recently, a small outdoor park was built around the hill behind the temple. This park transforms at night. It becomes the Penang Avatar Secret Garden with its LED flowers.

So, as you stand before this temple, remember the stories of Tua Pek Kong. Remember Hock Teik and Zhang Li. Feel the weight of history and the vibrancy of faith. Tua Pek Kong Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Chinese community in Penang. It is a beacon of protection and prosperity for all who seek its blessings.
