Listen closely. The story of SJK Subramaniya Barathee begins long before its current buildings existed. This Tamil primary school has a rich history. It started as a community hall.

SJK(T) Subramaniya Barathee is located in Bukit Gambir. It stands as one of Penang’s modern Tamil primary schools. You can find it on Cangkat Minden Jalan 1. The school’s GPS coordinates are 5.36883, 100.30036.

Established in 1952, SJK(T) Subramaniya Barathee originally stood off Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. This was in Sungai Gelugor. The Sri Ambal Kindergarten now occupies that original site. Yayasan SP Setia provided a new location. The current building opened on August 29, 2014. It cost RM2.7 million to construct.

The school’s name honors Subramaniya Barathiyar. He was a renowned Tamil literary figure. Initially, the school operated within temple facilities. The Koperasi Serbaguna Gelugor Pulau Pinang owned the land then.

SJK(T) Subramaniya Barathee is the only Tamil language school in the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary area. Tamil classes started for adults. Later they became a primary school. The community initially called it Subramaniya Barathee Tamil Padasalai.

The school was registered on July 26, 1956. Dr.N.K.Menon, Superintendent of Education, oversaw the registration. He represented the Settlement State of Penang.

In February 2024, a new extension block neared completion. It cost RM3 million. The existing building had 13 classrooms. The school needed 18 in total. The extension will provide space for special learning activities. These include art, music and computing.

Pupil intake rose. In 2015, there were 208 pupils. By the current year, the number increased to 425. The school raised funds for the extension. The Education Ministry allocated RM800,000 in 2017.

The new classrooms include a computer lab. There is also a music room, art room and workshop. A virtual reality studio and robotics room will be available. There will even be rooms for religious classes. A pre-school with a kitchen and playground is planned.

The Penang government allocated RM100,000 for the construction project. The estimated cost was around RM2.5 million. The school celebrated its 70th anniversary.

The current building in Bukit Gambir has nine classrooms. It also features a computer and science laboratory. A library enriches the learning environment. The school management can be contacted for donations.
