Did you know that SMK Raja Tun Uda started in a humble building? It began in 1963. Back then, it was known as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bayan Lepas. Imagine students learning in borrowed classrooms. The school shared space with Sekolah Rendah Inggeris Bayan Lepas. Tan Sri Khir Johari inaugurated the school. Tuan Haji Azyze chaired the school board.
SMK Raja Tun Uda’s story is one of growth. In 1964, there were only 240 students. Ten teachers guided them. Encik Fadzil B. Jaafar led the school. Students came from Bayan Lepas and Batu Maung. They also came from Teluk Kumbar and Sungai Ara. Some traveled from Gelugor and Balik Pulau.
SMKBL was the first national secondary school in the Southwest District. A new building was constructed in 1964. It was near the English School. This expansion accommodated the increasing student population. Education reforms required more space.
In 1965, SMKBL faced overcrowding. Classes were held at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bayan Lepas. Another location was Sekolah Agama Sungai Ara. Later that year, the new building was ready. On July 20, 1965, Encik Mohd. Khir Johari officially opened it. The school’s name changed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Raja Tun Uda. Allahyarham Encik Mohamad Kamil bin Hassan became the first principal. Cikgu Fadzil bin Jaafar was his assistant. SMKRTU offered diverse programs including languages. It also thought humanities, technical skills, vocational training, science, and mathematics.
The school’s name honors Raja Sir Tun Uda Al-Haj bin Raja Muhammad. He was the first Governor of Penang.
The airport expansion forced SMK Raja Tun Uda to relocate in 1983. Its new home was on Jalan Tengah Bayan Lepas. The site spanned 12.6 acres.
In 1987, SMK Raja Tun Uda began offering Form Six classes. The science stream started with 19 students. These students came from different schools. In 2015, Form Six classes moved to Sekolah Menengah Sungai Ara.
By 2020, SMK Raja Tun Uda had 1,419 students. There were 120 teachers. Haji Mohammad Shukor Bin Zakariah served as principal.
SMK Raja Tun Uda stands as a showcase school. SMP Pertiwi from Indonesia visited in 2010. The school excels in resource management. Archery and catering are strong programs. It’s also a leader in school based assessments.
Several organizations adopted SMK Raja Tun Uda. These include Pintar Foundation, Malaysia Airlines, and Balai Polis Bayan Baru. The Fire and Rescue Department also supports the school. Intel is another partner.
SMK Raja Tun Uda provides many activities. They include academic enrichment programs. There are also motivational workshops. Mentor-mentee relationships are fostered. The school promotes reading and character development. Parent-teacher meetings strengthen communication.
