Founded in 1961 Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Green Lane stands proudly. It’s a testament to the dedication of the Roman Catholic missionaries. Father M Surmon a pivotal figure played a significant role. He was a parish priest at the Church of the Holy Spirit. He resided with the Little Sisters of the Poor. The school opened its doors on April 3 1961.
Sister Helen O’Sullivan the school’s first headmistress oversaw its early years. Imagine just twelve classrooms forming the initial school. Expansion was gradual. A school hall was added in 1968. A library followed six years later. The school’s growth reflects the growing need for girls’ education.
The school’s origins are intertwined with the Infant Jesus Sisters. They had a long history of educating girls. They started in France before coming to Malaya in 1852. Convent Green Lane’s founding involved teachers and students from Convent Light Street. They temporarily moved to Jalan Masjid Negeri before the new building was complete.
Over the decades many principals guided the school. Sister Aidan Fitzgerald served from 1972 to 1988. She was a notable figure. She even gained Malaysian citizenship in 1966. Subsequent principals continued to shape the school’s identity. The school boasts a rich legacy. It’s not just about academics. It nurtured future leaders.
One of its most famous students is Datuk Nicol Ann David. She’s a world-renowned squash player. She’s the first Asian woman to become world number one. Nicol and her sisters all attended Convent Green Lane. Their success reflects the school’s holistic approach to education. The school is a place of pride for Penang. It’s more than just a school.
