“KE ARAH KECEMERLANGAN ILMU DAN KESEMPURNAA AKHLAK” That’s the enduring motto of SMKA Al-Mashoor. It reflects the school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. SMKA Al-Mashoor stands for Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (P) Almashoor. It is also known as ALMASHOOR ISLAMIC GIRLS SCHOOL.
SMKA Al-Mashoor’s story began on Thursday, November 9th, 1916. This corresponds to the 16th of Muharram 1335 AH. It was first known as Madrasah Al Quran. The location was Acheen Street Penang. Al-Syed Al-Shaik Al-Hadi served as its first principal.
Later, the school relocated to Kampung Jawa Lama. It was in the heart of Georgetown. At that time, it adopted the name Madrasah Mashoor Al Islamiah. This was named after Tuan Habib Al-Mashoor. He was a respected community elder.
In 1920, SMKA Al-Mashoor moved to Lebuh Tek Soon. The land belonged to Tuan Haji Bachik. The school grew quickly here. They charged students RM2 in fees. During the Japanese occupation, Madrasah Al Mashoor closed for three years and eight months. It reopened in 1945 when the British returned.
In 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman visited Madrasah Al Mashoor. He promised to build new buildings for the school.
A construction committee formed. They worked hard for the new school. The heirs of Tuan K.M.S Sultan Alaudin donated land and a house on Jalan Lunas. This was for the girls’ school.
In 1979, the Ministry of Education took over the boys’ and girls’ Madrasah Al Mashoor. They built a new building on Jalan Air Itam for the boys.
Three years after the government takeover of SMKA (P) Al Mashoor, there were plans for a new building. The old building was aging and couldn’t accommodate the growing number of students. From 1982 to 1984, the female students temporarily studied at SMKA (L) Al-Mashoor. In October 1984, they moved to the new building. This marked the establishment of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (Perempuan) Al Mashoor in Medan Lim Cheng Teik, Penang.
In 1984, the Ministry took over administration. This ensured a better school system. It also helped expand religious education. The goal is for excellence in knowledge and perfection in character.
SMKA Al-Mashoor stands as a beacon of Islamic education for girls in Penang. Its long history reflects a commitment to academic excellence and strong moral values. The school continues to shape young women. It empowers them to contribute positively to society.
