October 21st, 1816. A date etched in the stone of Penang Free School. This very institution opened its doors for the first time, welcoming 25 boys into its humble rented house on Love Lane. Penang Free School. The name itself resonates with history. It signifies a promise of education, free from the constraints of race or religion, a radical concept for the time. Rev. Robert Sparke Hutchings, the driving force behind the school’s establishment, envisioned a place where young minds could flourish, regardless of their background. Penang Free School’s initial location on Love Lane was merely a temporary haven. A grander building was already under construction on Farquhar Street, next to St. George’s Church. This new home, completed in 1821, became a beacon of learning for generations to come. Fast forward to 1928. Penang Free School outgrew its Farquhar Street location and embarked on a new chapter. It relocated to its current sprawling 30-acre campus on Green Lane, also known as Jalan Masjid Negeri. The old school building, steeped in history, was transformed into Hutchings School and now houses the Penang State Museum. Imagine the echoes of past lessons still lingering within those walls. It housed the first communist cell to infiltrate a Malayan school, a clandestine group nurtured by socialist-leaning schoolmasters.
