Clutching my rumbling stomach, I stood before Street Art – Banh Bao. “I want bao!” I heard a child’s voice echo behind me. It was the inspiration for this artwork. Street Art – Banh Bao captures a quintessential Penang moment. Two children, a boy and a girl, reach longingly through a window. They yearn for the delicious bao buns in the basket of a parked bicycle. This mural, located on Lebuh Armenian, depicts the children of the owner of the adjacent Ming Xiang Tai Pastry Shop. The artist, WK Setor, based in Penang, created this playful piece in 2014. It was commissioned by the shop owner for Chinese New Year. He wanted to celebrate local life and advertise his business simultaneously. The children’s eager expressions and outstretched arms add a touch of humor to the scene. The bamboo steamer on the bicycle, sadly almost ruined by eager tourists, adds to the interactive nature of the artwork. This mural invites you to become a part of the story, to imagine the children’s anticipation, and perhaps even crave a bao bun yourself. Street Art – Banh Bao perfectly captures the spirit of Penang.
