“Malaysia’s Silicon Valley.” That’s the nickname of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone. Right here in Penang, this zone has a remarkable history. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone was the brainchild of Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu. He was Penang’s second Chief Minister. In 1972, the zone opened as Malaysia’s first free trade zone. It was meant to diversify Penang’s economy, and lessen its dependence on tourism. Originally, it was known as the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone. Today, this name refers to Phases I and II of the zone. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone encompasses a vast 1,400 acres. It houses multinational giants like Intel, Bosch, Motorola, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard. It has played a key role in Penang becoming Malaysia’s third-largest economy. The zone is strategically located less than a kilometer from Penang International Airport. This facilitates the export of goods. It has contributed to George Town becoming a leading exporter in Malaysia. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone isn’t just a manufacturing hub. Penang aims to transform it into a global leader in semiconductor research and development. Initiatives like the Silicon Research and Incubation Space and a chip academy are underway. The goal is to bolster Penang’s position as Malaysia’s semiconductor hub. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone has four phases. Phase Three was developed on former rice fields and mangrove swamps of Kampung Jawa. One-third of it stands on reclaimed land. Phase Four, developed in the early 1990s, is the largest. It’s primarily home to logistics companies due to its proximity to the Penang Airport Cargo Complex. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone stands as a testament to vision and strategic planning. It has propelled Penang onto the global stage.
