Tikus Island

Off the coast of Penang Island, shrouded in an ethereal mist, lies the enigmatic Tikus Island. Tikus Island, also known as Rat Island, isn’t overrun with rodents, despite its name. The moniker actually stems from a small, mouse-shaped rocky outcrop located about 2km northeast of Penang Island. This small island, resembling a tiny mouse from afar, is believed to have given the larger Tikus Island its intriguing name. Tikus Island boasts a unique history interwoven with local legends and maritime significance. The island serves as a vital navigational landmark. At its heart stands a solar-powered lighthouse, casting a watchful beam across the treacherous waters. These waters, riddled with hidden boulders, make navigation challenging and have led to numerous shipwrecks throughout history. At low tide, these submerged rocks emerge, creating an eerie landscape. Experienced kayakers sometimes brave these waters, hoping to catch glimpses of the diverse marine life that thrives among the boulders, including groupers and whelks. Ashore, amidst the rugged terrain, lies a vestige of the past: the ruins of an old house. Its roof, porch, and verandah walls stand defiantly against the elements. The skeletal remains of this structure hint at a forgotten story. Who lived here? What became of them? The answers remain elusive, lost to the passage of time. The island also harbors a more recent secret: a solar-powered lighthouse, guiding ships away from its rocky perimeter. Nearby, nestled amongst the ruins, is a shrine housing the tomb of Seyad Mohamed Kuddoos Oliyullah. Legend whispers that he was a Muslim saint, though the details of his life remain shrouded in mystery. Despite the passage of time, the tomb is well-maintained, a testament to the reverence he inspires.
