“Laksa, please.” This might sound like an odd request at a temple. But at Wat Chayamangkalaram, it’s a tradition.

Welcome to Wat Chayamangkalaram. It is also known as the Chayamangkalaram Buddhist Temple. This is the oldest Siamese temple in Penang. Here, history whispers from every corner. Queen Victoria granted this land in 1845. It was a gesture of goodwill to the Thai community. The temple became a reality because of Phra Phorthan Kuad. He was a powerful monk from Siam.

The aroma of incense mixes with the imagined scent of asam laksa. This dish was a favorite of Phra Phorthan Kuad. Devotees still offer it at his shrine. Imagine the vibrant Songkran festivities. Picture the serene Loy Krathong celebrations. Wat Chayamangkalaram is a focal point for these annual events.

The temple was officially named Wat Chayamangkalaram in 1948. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand visited in 1962. He came with Queen Sirikit. They made it part of their state visit to Malaya.

Look around. Notice the Yakshas. These mythical demons guard the entrance. The architecture reflects Thai design. The temple has undergone several renovations since its creation.

Now, prepare to be amazed. Before you stands one of the world’s longest reclining Buddha statues. It measures 33 meters. The statue is named Phra Chaiya Mongkol. Construction was completed in 1958. It cost M$100,000.

The reclining Buddha represents Buddha at his death. It symbolizes peace and detachment. Observe his peaceful smile. Notice how he rests his head in his right hand.

Interestingly, the statue is also a columbarium. Urns containing the ashes of devotees are housed here. This shows the temple’s close ties to the Thai community.

Take a moment to explore the grounds. You can see smaller Buddha statues in various poses. Devas also adorn the prayer hall. The temple stupa has retained its original design. Lotus patterns decorate the floor. The temple also includes a small Thai village. You will also find a Thai cemetery.

Remember the blend of cultures. Consider the Siamese past. Wat Chayamangkalaram stands as a testament to history. It is a vibrant center of faith and tradition. As you leave, carry with you the serenity. Remember the story of the laksa-loving monk. Let the image of the reclining Buddha stay with you.
