A golden shrine once housed her remains. This is the site of the Cathédrale Sainte-Geneviève. Its story begins long ago. Sainte Geneviève a noblewoman from Nanterre became Paris’s patron saint. She was born around 422 AD. Legend tells of her unwavering faith during Attila’s siege in 451 AD. Geneviève urged Parisians to defend their city instead of fleeing. Her prayers are said to have saved Paris from destruction. She became a heroine.

The Abbey Sainte-Geneviève was established under King Clovis’s patronage. Clovis and his queen Clotilde were buried there. Geneviève’s remains joined them. The basilica originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul was renamed the Sainte-Geneviève Church. Miracles attributed to her resting place made it a pilgrimage site.

Sadly the French Revolution brought destruction. The abbey was destroyed. The graves of Clovis Clotilde and Sainte-Geneviève were desecrated. Geneviève’s golden shrine was melted down. Her remains were burned their ashes scattered in the Seine.

However one artifact survived her original stone sarcophagus. It was found in the church’s crypt in 1802. The sarcophagus along with relics found in other churches was placed in a new shrine at the St Etienne du Mont Church. The neo-Gothic Chapelle Sainte-Geneviève built in 1853 is a testament to her enduring reverence. Annual religious observances in January honor her memory.

The building before you is not the original abbey church. That was replaced by the magnificent structure we see today. It was built in the mid-18th century. King Louis XV promised its construction after recovering from a serious illness. He attributed his recovery to Sainte Geneviève’s intercession. The architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot designed the church. It was completed in 1790. It later became the Panthéon a mausoleum for notable French figures.

The Panthéon stands as a reminder of both the saint and the nation’s history. It blends the lightness of Gothic churches with the grandeur of Greek architecture. The church was almost entirely rebuilt in the 18th century. Yet it reflects the deep reverence for Sainte Geneviève. This magnificent building continues to inspire awe and wonder. The history of Paris and the devotion to its patron saint are interwoven within its walls. Reflect on the enduring legacy of Sainte Geneviève. Her courage faith and unwavering devotion live on in the hearts of Parisians. And in this building. The Cathédrale Sainte-Geneviève.
