Can you imagine a hotel built for a diva? A hotel filled with stories of fame and fortune, extravagance and heartbreak? That’s Hotel Judic, right here on Rue du Cardinal-Mercier, where the walls whisper tales of a legendary Parisian singer and a tragic downfall.

This grand building, a monument to the 19th-century Belle Époque, was built for the renowned actress and singer Anna Judic. Imagine, in the 1880s, the Parisian streets buzzing with excitement, as Anna, famous for her roles in operettas like “Mam’zelle Nitouche,” commissioned this magnificent, eclectic mansion. It was bold, almost defiant, an expression of Anna’s own stardom.

Architect Jacques Drevet, a master of the eclectic style, infused Renaissance and Gothic elements into the design, creating a truly unique architectural masterpiece. The building’s facade is a visual feast, adorned with intricate carvings, whimsical sculptures, and a grand window on the upper floor, showcasing a breathtaking stained-glass masterpiece. This glass, by the famed Parisian master Charles Champigneulle, depicts Cleopatra and Antoine amidst swirling patterns of light, evoking the grandeur of the ancient world.

But even the most dazzling star can be eclipsed by fate. Anna’s success was tragically cut short by the death of her husband, Emile Judic. Financial woes followed, and she was forced to sell the hotel, along with its exquisite furnishings, to an architect named Émile Vabre. The opulence became a stage for parties and revelry, as Vabre hosted the Parisian elite. But shadows lurked behind the grandeur. The hotel, once a symbol of Anna’s triumph, became a haven for clandestine gambling and illicit gatherings.

After Vabre, the hotel changed hands many times, each owner leaving their mark on the building. In the 1970s, a German designer named Otto-Klaus Preis fell in love with the hotel and its history. He saw the hotel as a testament to Anna’s legacy and a piece of lost Parisian elegance. He dedicated himself to restoring it to its former glory, painstakingly recreating the interiors and rescuing valuable antiques.

Today, the Hotel Judic is a testament to the fleeting nature of fame and the enduring allure of Parisian history. It stands here, a reminder of the dreams, triumphs, and tragedies that unfold within the walls of this timeless city.
