From a king’s arsenal to a literary haven, the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal has witnessed centuries of history unfold within its walls. Originally built by King François I in the 16th century as a storehouse for gunpowder and munitions, the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, situated on Rue de Sully, has dramatically transformed over the years. Can you picture this very spot bustling with military activity? Under Henri II, the Arsenal modernized, but it truly flourished when the Duc de Sully, Grand Master of the Artillery, took up residence in 1599.

The Duc de Sully established his grand logis here, marking the beginning of the Arsenal’s transition from a purely military site. The opulence of the site grew under Louis XIII, with lavish apartments added. But the military function gradually diminished. Did you know that the Arsenal even served as a foundry for the statues that grace the gardens of Versailles? It’s a testament to the site’s multifaceted history.

In the 18th century, just before Louis XIV’s death, a transformation began. A new building was commissioned for the Duc du Maine, legitimized son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Germain Boffrand designed this new addition, which unfortunately masked Sully’s original southern facade. Due to financial constraints, only the basic structure was completed by the time the Duc du Maine died in 1736. He barely had a chance to enjoy it.

The Comte d’Eu, the Duc du Maine’s brother, inherited the building but left it unfinished. Masons Destriches, father and son, occupied part of the structure, adorning a series of salons with an elegant décor that still exists today. Then came the Marquis de Paulmy d’Argenson in 1756. With the position of Grand Master of the Artillery abolished, he was appointed governor and began to consolidate his control. He eventually claimed over 170 rooms for his use, transforming the space into his private library.

This marked the birth of the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal as we know it today. The Marquis de Paulmy amassed an impressive collection of books, manuscripts, and prints, including medieval manuscripts. His vision was to rival the Royal Library, a vision he pursued by purchasing the Duc de la Vallière’s collection in 1786. Eventually, he sold the entire library to the Comte d’Artois in 1785, ensuring its accessibility to scholars. During the French Revolution, the library was nearly destroyed by a mob but was saved by a quick-thinking librarian who dressed the guard in the King’s livery, causing the crowd to disperse.

The Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal became national property, enriched with confiscated works. It opened to the public in 1797. The 19th century saw the library’s reputation grow under Charles Nodier, a writer and librarian. The collection further specialized in literature, especially theater. Today, the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, part of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France since 1934, houses over a million documents, showcasing its evolution from a military storehouse to a sanctuary of literature and history.
