Did the rhythmic chanting of Augustinian nuns once echo through these very walls? Here, before us, stands la Immaculada Concepció, a convent whispering tales of resilience, relocation, and remarkable relics. La Immaculada Concepció isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. In the 16th century, the Council of Trent’s decrees forced the Augustinian nuns from their serene mountain monastery on Puig de Pollença down into the bustling city of Palma. Imagine their upheaval, trading mountain vistas for city walls. They initially found temporary shelter at Sant Antoniet, the house of the Antonians. But their hearts yearned for a permanent home. In 1577, they finally settled near the Sitjar Gate on what is now Carrer de la Concepció. Construction of their first church began in 1580, a beacon of hope in their new urban life. Years later, the convent expanded, eventually leading to a grander church, its construction starting in 1614. La Immaculada Concepció wasn’t merely growing in size, but also in significance. The confiscatory measures of the 19th century brought another wave of change. Nuns from the Santa Margalida convent, also Augustinians, found refuge within la Immaculada Concepció. These displaced nuns didn’t arrive empty-handed. They carried their cherished possessions, including two revered images: the Sant Crist del Noguer (Holy Christ of the Walnut Tree) and the Santa Faç (Holy Face). The Sant Crist del Noguer, a miraculous image said to be found within a fallen walnut tree, and the Santa Faç, with its captivating Diumenge del Ram (Palm Sunday) tradition, enriched la Immaculada Concepció’s spiritual tapestry. La Immaculada Concepció became more than just a convent; it evolved into a repository of faith, a testament to resilience, and a haven for displaced communities. The main altarpiece, a Baroque masterpiece, is dominated by Jaume Blanquer’s image of the Immaculate Conception, a fitting centerpiece for this sanctuary. La Immaculada Concepció holds within its walls not just stones and mortar, but the echoes of devotion, the weight of history, and the enduring power of faith.
