Was it a divine calling or the echoes of loss that led young Catalina Thomàs down her extraordinary path? Here at Santa Catalina Thomàs, in the heart of Palma, her story unfolds. Born in Valldemossa in 1531, Catalina’s early life was marked by the passing of her parents. She found solace with her grandparents near the Valldemossa Charterhouse, a place steeped in history and spirituality. At ten, her life took another turn, moving to the Son Gallard estate. Santa Catalina Thomàs toiled in the fields, a young shepherdess with a heart full of yearning for a different life. The mundane tasks clashed with her burgeoning spiritual aspirations, creating internal conflict. During this tumultuous period, Catalina received comfort and guidance through visions of saints, including Bruno of Cologne, Catherine of Alexandria, and Anthony the Abbot. These divine encounters affirmed her calling and gave her strength. In 1550, with the aid of Antonio Castañeda, a former soldier turned hermit, she finally broke free from familial expectations. Santa Catalina Thomàs found work with the Zaforteza Tagamanent family in Palma, a stepping stone toward her true destiny. On November 13, 1552, she entered the Convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Palma, joining the Canonesses of St. Augustine. Within the convent walls, her reputation for sanctity blossomed. People from all walks of life, from bishops to the poor, sought her wisdom and counsel. Santa Catalina Thomàs became known for her mystical experiences, including angelic visitations and profound ecstasies that consumed her final years. Her earthly journey ended on April 5, 1574, but her spiritual legacy had just begun. Initially venerated locally, a decree by Pope Urban VII temporarily halted her recognition. However, through the persistent efforts of locals and Bishop Antonio Despuig y Dameto, her cause was revived. Santa Catalina Thomàs was beatified in 1792 by Pope Pius VI and finally canonized in 1930 by Pope Pius XI. Today, her memory is cherished, particularly here in Palma and in her birthplace of Valldemossa. Her story, etched in the very fabric of this island, reminds us that even in the simplest of lives, extraordinary holiness can bloom.
