Was Bartomeu Riutort a dreamer or a genius? Here in Can Pastilla, his vision took root. Can Pastilla, as many of you know, sits comfortably close to Palma, a mere 10 minutes away. But it wasn’t always the bustling resort town we see today. In the 1920s, Riutort, a liquor maker, saw the potential of this small fishing village. He envisioned a “bouquet of modern construction,” a new tourist haven nestled between El Arenal and es Coll de’n Rabassa. He even convinced the Ripoll brothers, owners of the “Sa Torre Rodona” estate, to donate land for a church. This church, dedicated to Sant Antonio de la Play, became one of the first signs of Can Pastilla’s transformation. Can Pastilla continued to grow. In the 1930’s, with its newly established parish of St. Anthony of Padua, the small village began its metamorphosis. The original Hotel Can Pastilla, built in 1918, marked the beginning of this shift. The 1960s saw an influx of British tourists, drawn to the growing number of hotels and the allure of the long sandy beach. Today, Can Pastilla boasts a five-kilometre stretch of fine white sand, part of the larger Playa de Palma. This beach, with its shallow waters and convenient amenities, is perfect for families. A palm-lined promenade offers a scenic stroll. While Can Pastilla may not be a cultural hotspot, its proximity to Palma provides easy access to the island’s rich history and attractions. You can hop on a bus or take a short taxi ride to explore museums, historical sites, or the vibrant city life. And for those who enjoy a more relaxed pace, Can Pastilla offers a tranquil escape, with its focus on family-friendly beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. So, as you stroll along the promenade or bask on the beach, remember the vision of Bartomeu Riutort, the liquor maker who dreamed of transforming a small fishing village into the resort town we know today as Can Pastilla.
