Gazing out at the Badia de Palma let me share a story about this place. It’s about the Parc de la Mar. This park wasn’t always here. Its creation involved overcoming much controversy.

The Parc de la Mar’s planning began in the late 1960s. It took over ten years to come to life. Finally, in 1984, the park was inaugurated. It had a lake and lovely gardens. The citizens of Palma and visitors embraced it.

The Parc de la Mar now stands between Palma’s Cathedral and the seafront. It is a testament to perseverance. The park has a rich assortment of trees. Many palm trees offer shade. A walk here gives rewarding views. Look across the Badia de Palma. See La Seu, the Cathedral, and the Palau de l’Almudaina.

Notice the art sculptures dotted around. A strange assortment of arches is here. Catalan artist Josep Guinovart created them. You’ll also see heads and helmets. Ben Jakober is the artist behind these. Look for the boat hulls too. Cuban artist Kcho made these.

The Parc de la Mar features a large saltwater lake. It recreates the image of the sea. The sea formerly came up to the city wall. Now, the lake reflects the wonderful Cathedral of Palma. The reflections change throughout the day. It’s a full-time show with nature’s help.

Head east to find a children’s playground. The Parc de la Mar offers something for everyone. The Parc de la Mar is a historic garden. It is catalogued in travel apps.
