Imagine the energy here on match day, the anticipation hanging thick in the air. This stadium, the largest in the Balearic Islands, has seen its fair share of dramatic moments since opening in June 1999. Originally called Estadi de Son Moix, it’s gone through a few name changes over the years, reflecting the island’s identity and partnerships. It’s been Ono Estadi, Iberostar Estadi, Visit Mallorca Estadi, and now back to its current name, Mallorca Son Moix Stadium. Built for the 1999 Summer Universiade, the stadium quickly became home to RCD Mallorca. They secured a 50-year agreement with the city council, leaving behind their old grounds at Estadio Lluís Sitjar. The Mallorca Son Moix Stadium boasts a capacity of 23,142. It’s a bowl-shaped arena, with two-tiered stands that bring fans close to the action. While plans for expansion to over 40,000 seats exist, they’re currently on hold. RCD Mallorca is exploring options for a brand-new stadium due to disagreements with the landlords about improvements to the existing one. Interestingly, a small temporary stand is sometimes added on the athletics track, a reminder of the stadium’s multi-purpose origins. This stand is removed when track and field events are held. The Spanish national football team has also graced the field here, playing several international matches. Their most recent appearance was in June 2024, a friendly against Northern Ireland. The match ended in a resounding 5-1 victory for Spain.
