Hidden within Palma lies a building that whispers tales of power, tradition, and transformation. The Parlament de les Illes Balears, housed in the former Círculo Mallorquín, stands as a testament to the islands’ vibrant history. The Parlament, the seat of the Balearic Islands’ autonomous government, didn’t always reside here. Originally, this elegant modernist structure, designed by Antonio Sureda i Villalonga, served as a social club for Palma’s bourgeoisie. Imagine the scene in 1882, when construction began. This building, nestled between Carrer Conquistador and Carrer Palau Reial, became a hub of cultural and social life. The Círculo Mallorquín hosted gatherings, speeches, and even fencing matches within its walls. Its importance is underscored by royal visits from Queen Isabella II in 1860 and King Alfonso XIII in 1904. Such regal visits were rare. No monarch had set foot on the island since Emperor Charles I in 1541. The main saloon, lavishly decorated by Ricardo Anckermann, played host to these royal guests, though the extravagant embellishments plunged the Círculo into debt. A major renovation in 1913 shaped the building into the form we see today. In the late 20th century, the Círculo Mallorquín underwent a dramatic transformation. It was ceded to the region and, in August 1983, became the home of the Parlament de les Illes Balears. The 59 members of the Parlament, representing Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, now occupy the space where the island’s elite once gathered. This unicameral parliament holds the power to legislate, approve budgets, and elect the regional president. The Parlament de les Illes Balears, a beacon of democracy, stands as a symbol of the Balearic Islands’ journey from a kingdom to an autonomous community within Spain. From a social club echoing with the clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversations, to a parliament resonating with debates that shape the future of the islands, this building has borne witness to the ebb and flow of history. The Parlament de les Illes Balears continues to write its story, shaping the destiny of the Balearic Islands, within the walls of this remarkable building.
