Moorish remains lie beneath our feet. This is where the story of the Santa Clara Convent in Palma begins. Founded in 1256, Santa Clara is one of Palma’s oldest female convents. Franciscan nuns from Tarragona established it. King Jaume I supported them with land and donations.

The Santa Clara Convent offers a peaceful retreat. It stands in contrast to Palma’s bustling atmosphere. The nuns have preserved its traditions. Visitors admire the exquisite Gothic architecture. Intricate stonework and towering arches mark the era’s artistry. The courtyard provides serenity. Lush gardens and tranquil fountains invite reflection.

Throughout history, Santa Clara has undergone many renovations. The nobility of the island financed these restructurings. This resulted in a blend of Gothic, post-Renaissance and Baroque styles. Since 2007, the convent has been in continuous maintenance.

The Santa Clara Convent is more than just a historical site. It is a spiritual heart in Mallorca. The convent also holds great historical importance. It has been part of Palma’s urban development since 1256.

A small wooden door holds a secret. It is located to the right of the church entrance. Touch it and enter. You’ll discover the “torno”. This is the only way the Clarisas nuns interact with the outside world. Here, they sell exquisite cookies. The nuns themselves make these cookies. They are sold at affordable prices. The money raised supports social works and convent maintenance.

Tradition says brides bring a dozen eggs to the convent. If the eggs remain intact, the marriage will be lucky. No rain will fall during the wedding. But, if something happens to the eggs then luck may not be on their side.

The Santa Clara church has a single nave ground floor. Four lateral chapels are separated by barrel vaults. The church preserves the pulpit of Father Junípero Serra. He was known for his preaching skills. He delivered four lessons of the Seraphic school here in 1744.

Inside the Santa Clara church, you can see Gothic tombs. Important nuns of this convent are buried here. If you are lucky, you might even hear the nuns singing.

Plan your visit to Santa Clara during the morning. It will be a quieter experience. Don’t miss the chance to explore the gardens. Remember to respect the peaceful atmosphere. Silence is appreciated.

As you leave the Santa Clara Convent, reflect on its history. Consider the nuns’ dedication. Carry with you the tranquility of this special place. It is a peaceful escape in the heart of Palma.
