Bellver Castle

Gazing up at Bellver Castle, one might wonder if its circular walls ever held secrets as round and complete as themselves. Bellver Castle, a unique structure, sits majestically on a hill overlooking Palma de Mallorca. Its distinctive circular design, a rarity in 14th-century Europe, sets it apart from other medieval fortresses. Bellver Castle was commissioned by King James II of Mallorca. The castle was completed in 1311. It served initially as a royal residence. Imagine King James II standing on the ramparts, taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of Palma and the Mediterranean Sea. The same view captivates visitors today, making it a photographer’s dream. But Bellver Castle hasn’t always been a peaceful haven. Its history is marked by sieges, imprisonments, and transformations. During the Middle Ages, it endured and withstood two sieges. The first occurred in 1343 when Peter IV of Aragon attempted to reclaim Majorcan territories. The second siege happened in 1391 during an anti-Semitic peasant revolt. The castle also served time as a prison. From the 18th century onwards, it housed political prisoners within its dark dungeons. One of the most famous inmates was Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, a minister under Charles IV. Jovellanos, despite his confinement, commissioned the first blueprints and drawings of Bellver Castle. He also meticulously documented the botanical and geological features of the surrounding pine forest. In the 20th century, Bellver Castle transitioned from prison to cultural landmark. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931. In 1936, it became the home of the Museum of the History of the City. Today, visitors can explore the castle’s rich history through guided tours. The museum offers exhibitions that delve into Palma’s urban evolution and the artistic legacy of Antoni Despuig. There’s even a room dedicated to Jovellanos, showcasing his life and writings from his time at Bellver Castle. Beyond the historical exhibits, Bellver Castle remains a vibrant cultural hub.
