Was this towering column always broken, you might wonder? The Monumento ai Caduti del Mare, here in Piazza Vittoria, has a curious history. Constructed in 1914, it wasn’t meant to be a monument to fallen sailors initially. The large base dates back to 1867. It was intended to hold a grand statue of Admiral Francesco Caracciolo, a hero of the Neapolitan Republic. However, lack of funds stalled the project. Years later, after the Battle of Lissa in 1866, the idea shifted to a monument for those lost at sea. Again, financial constraints halted the project. Finally, in 1914, a solution emerged. A massive ancient Roman cipollino column, weighing nearly 20 tons, was brought from the storerooms of the National Archaeological Museum. This column, once intended as support for Naples Cathedral’s bell tower, became the centerpiece of the Monumento ai Caduti del Mare. Its broken state seems to embody the sacrifices made by those lost at sea, a poignant reminder of their bravery and the unpredictable nature of the sea.
