A royal escape from a stormy sea. That’s how the grand Reggia di Portici was born. Right here, in this very spot, King Charles of Bourbon and his wife, Queen Maria Amalia of Saxony, found refuge from a sudden tempest. Charmed by the beauty of the area, they vowed to create a palace fit for a king. The Reggia di Portici became their dream realized, a magnificent blend of baroque architecture and stunning natural beauty. The construction began in 1738, led by the talented architect Giovanni Antonio Medrano. Later, Antonio Canevari took over the project, adding his own touch to this royal masterpiece. Today, the Reggia di Portici is more than just a palace. It’s a testament to a love story, a king’s promise and the enduring power of beauty. Within its walls, it houses the prestigious Faculty of Agriculture of the Federico II University of Naples, a fitting evolution for a palace born from an appreciation of the land and sea. The Reggia di Portici also holds a unique place in history, as it was closely tied to the discovery of the ancient cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. In fact, the palace housed the first museum dedicated to the artifacts unearthed from these buried cities, the Herculanense Museum. Imagine the treasures that were once displayed here, whispering tales of Roman life frozen in time. Though those artifacts now reside in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Reggia di Portici continues to captivate with its own stories, a blend of royal grandeur, academic pursuit and a touch of ancient mystery.
