Hidden amidst the lush greenery near the Isar River stands the Marienklause a small chapel steeped in history. This unassuming structure boasts a fascinating story. Built in 1866 by Martin Achleitner the chapel is more than just a place of worship.

Achleitner was the water master of the Auer-Mühlbach lock nearby. He built the Marienklause with his own hands. He dedicated it to the Mother of God. He believed she saved him from death multiple times. The Isar River was wild and dangerous. Floods and rockfalls were common threats. Achleitner felt deeply grateful for his survival.

The Marienklause is nestled into the steep Isar River bank. It’s constructed from local Nagelfluh stone and wood. Notice the rough rocks inside. They are made of molasse conglomerate a sedimentary rock often containing fossils. The chapel is a testament to Achleitner’s devotion and skill. It’s also a stunning example of local materials used in construction.

Below the chapel you’ll find the Jakobsquelle a small spring. Achleitner integrated it into the chapel’s design. Small caves adorned with devotional images and candles flank the spring grotto. Fresh flowers and burning candles often decorate the chapel. It has been beautifully maintained over the years through several renovations.

A short distance below the chapel lies an open courtyard. You’ll see stone Stations of the Cross and an open-air altar beneath the trees. Achleitner also built the first serpentine paths along this part of the Isar River bank. He even constructed supporting walls and viaducts from Nagelfluh stone.

The Marienklause remains a popular destination particularly during May devotions. It is now under the care of the Catholic Deanery of Munich-Südost. It continues to be a place of peace and reflection. It’s a unique blend of faith history and natural beauty. The Marienklause is a true hidden gem of Munich. A testament to one man’s faith and engineering skill.
