From a simple collection of images to Germany’s largest municipal museum. That’s the incredible journey of the Münchner Stadtmuseum. The Münchner Stadtmuseum stands as a testament to Munich’s vibrant past. It first opened its doors in 1888. The city’s citizens had a growing interest in their own history. The museum began in the late Gothic armory on St.-Jakobs-Platz. This building had housed the militia’s weapons and equipment since the Middle Ages. The museum’s first director, Ernst von Destouches, oversaw a collection of artifacts. These artifacts varied in their relevance to the city’s history. The Münchner Stadtmuseum initially shared the space with the Maillinger Collection. This was a massive collection of 30,000 graphic art pieces about Munich. It was acquired through a public lottery. In the 1920s, Konrad Schießl, a clerk at the museum, spearheaded its transformation into a museum of local history. The museum expanded between 1927 and 1931. New wings were added, including the Gräßeltrakt and the Leitenstorfertrakt. This expansion allowed the Münchner Stadtmuseum to showcase a broader range of exhibits. The museum reopened in 1931 with a renewed focus on Munich’s local history. During World War II, the collections were moved for safekeeping. This foresight minimized losses when the armory was bombed in 1944. After the war, the museum reopened in 1954. Max Heiß renamed it the Münchner Stadtmuseum. He oversaw a period of expansion and the addition of special collections. These included the Puppet Theater Collection, the Municipal Musical Instrument Collection, and the Photography Museum. Later additions included the Filmmuseum and the Brewery Museum. A fashion and costume collection was gifted to the museum in 1970. This broadened its scope and appeal. The Münchner Stadtmuseum continued to grow with the construction of the Gsaengertrakt in the 1960s and the reconstruction of the royal stables in 1977. Today, the Münchner Stadtmuseum comprises a complex of buildings. It has undergone extensive renovation and remodeling. The museum’s collection has grown to over four million artifacts. The Münchner Stadtmuseum is a captivating journey through Munich’s rich and diverse history. It stands as a proud symbol of the city’s cultural heritage.
