Wow What an elegant building This is the Palais Montgelas.
The Palais Montgelas stands proudly at the corner of Promenadeplatz and Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse. It’s more than just a pretty face though. This grand building whispers tales of Munich’s rich past.
Commissioned by Count Maximilian von Montgelas the Palais was built between 1811 and 1813. The architect Emanuel Josef Herigoyen designed its classicist style. Jean Baptiste Métivier was responsible for its stunning interior. The second floor boasted impressive reception rooms. These rooms were quite grand for their time. They included a magnificent King’s Hall. After Count Montgelas resigned he sold the Palais in 1817 to the Bavarian state.
For years the building served as the seat of the Bavarian Ministry of the Royal Household and Foreign Affairs. Later it became the Bavarian State Chancellery’s office. The Palais remained a center of power until 1945.
In 1969 the Hotel Bayerischer Hof acquired the Palais. Architect Erwin Schleich carefully restored it. He cleverly preserved the original stunning interior rooms. Today the Palais Montgelas is integrated seamlessly into the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. It’s a testament to the beautiful blend of history and modern luxury.
