Struggling for the disappeared during Uruguay’s dictatorship that is the legacy of Luisa Cuesta. This mural immortalizes her fight. It stands as a potent symbol of human rights. The Luisa Cuesta Mural is not just paint on a wall. It is a testament to a life dedicated to justice.

Luisa Cuesta was born Maria Luisa Cuesta Vila. She was born in Soriano in 1920. Luisa died in Montevideo in 2018. She lived a long life. She became a human rights activist. Her focus was searching for missing detainees. These people disappeared during Uruguay’s military dictatorship. That dictatorship lasted from 1973 to 1985. Luisa Cuesta’s own son, Nebio Melo Cuesta, disappeared. He is still missing today.

Luisa’s life took a dramatic turn in 1973. She was imprisoned for a time. Her son Nebio went into exile in Argentina. This was with his wife and daughter. But in 1976, Nebio was arrested in Buenos Aires. Then he disappeared. Luisa Cuesta then emigrated to the Netherlands. She stayed there with her family until 1985. That year marked the end of the regime. It also brought new democratic elections.

Returning to Uruguay, Luisa led families of the disappeared. She organized the yearly March of Silence. Hundreds joined to remember those lost. Montevideo recognized her with the title Illustrious Citizen in 2012. The University of the Republic awarded her a Doctor Honoris Causa in 2013. These honors celebrated her fight for human rights. A civic center in Casavalle bears her name since 2015.

José Gallino created this mural of Luisa Cuesta. It is located in Plaza Luisa Cuesta. The plaza is at the intersection of Lima and Acuña de Figueroa streets. This location is one block from Avenida Libertador. The plaza’s creation came from a neighborhood proposal. It won the Presupuesto Participativo in 2016. The Municipio B invested significantly. They wanted to create a true dream plaza.

The goal was to honor human rights. The mural captures Luisa’s essence. She symbolizes the best in us. “Young se pinta” was an activity in Río Negro. It also featured a mural of Luisa Cuesta by José Gallino. This event highlighted themes of animals, women, diversity, and identities. It brought together artists to create urban art.

The Intendencia de Montevideo and Municipio B created Plaza Polifuncion. It is in the Aguada neighborhood. The plaza connects families. It also features José Gallino’s mural of Luisa Cuesta. The community collected thousands of signatures. They requested that the plaza be named after Luisa Cuesta.

So let’s honor the enduring legacy of Luisa Cuesta. The Luisa Cuesta Mural serves as a reminder. It reminds us of the importance of fighting for human rights. It also reminds us to seek justice. It embodies the spirit of a tireless activist.
