Imagine living in a building so iconic it becomes a landmark. That’s the story of Edificio Panamericano. It rises before us on the Montevideo coast. Its unique design and history have made it a notable part of the city.

The Edificio Panamericano stands tall between Pocitos and Buceo. It faces the Port of Buceo. This location gives it a prominent position on Montevideo’s coastline. The building’s story began in the 1960s. Architect Raul A. Sichero Bouret designed and oversaw its construction. Atilio Farinasso collaborated with him. Construction spanned from 1960 to 1964. The original plans were never fully realized.

Look at the building’s supports. Notice the V shapes. These double-height supports are a defining feature. They contribute to its unique facade. Back then Uruguay lacked a glass facade industry. Yet the Edificio Panamericano became one of the first buildings with a transparent facade. It joined the ranks of Ciudadela, Gilpe, and el Notariado.

Originally, the Edificio Panamericano was grander in scope. The initial design included 10 independent apartment blocks. These would stretch across a 27000 square meter plot. Only 13% of the land would house the building. The rest was planned for parks and gardens. A large garage was planned for over 300 cars. It would offer services like fuel, lubrication, washing, and tire repair. The ground floor by the Rambla would feature reception halls. There were plans for a tea room, bar, confectionery, screening room, and gymnasium. The grand hall would host gatherings and exhibitions. It would offer views of the port. A small building near the port served as the architect’s studio for years.

However only half of the project was completed. Just five blocks were built. Still the Edificio Panamericano stands out. Its design reflects a modern approach to city living. It was conceived as a free standing block surrounded by greenery. This sparked debate about its urban planning.

The building’s internal structure includes five vertical circulations. They connect on the ground floor via a longitudinal hall. This hall has double height facing the port. The design uses a clear layout. It creates comfortable apartments facing both the front and back. Sichero aimed to create a sense of openness to the exterior.

Raul Sichero took on many roles for this project. He was the designer, promoter, and builder. He embraced risk and innovation. His approach was not always understood by his peers. In 1995 the city recognized its importance. The Mayor of Montevideo declared it a building of Municipal Interest.

Take a moment to appreciate the Edificio Panamericano. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of architectural vision. It reflects a moment in Montevideo’s history. Its modern design continues to captivate.
